Carroll County Police Chase Ends on Family’s Back Porch

CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — Two Carroll County residents were on edge after a police chase ended on their back porch, Sunday. In the early morning hours, two Cedar Grove residents woke up to a loud bang on their back door. “He said he was lost and cold and he was trying to use a phone and tried to give me $20 to take him to Jackson,” homeowner Tony Simmons said. Tiffany Bolton says her first thought was her step children. “I was nervous. The girls were literally 20 feet away from him,” Bolton said. At that time, a Carroll County Sheriff car drove by. Bolton says when she saw the sheriff pull in on Watertower Road she flickered her porch lights to let the sheriff know he was there. It was the end to an eight hour search for 20-year-old Terry Womack. It started around 9 p.m. on Saturday. Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Jackson said he tried to stop a car on US 70 going about 80 miles per hour. After about a quarter mile, the car turned at Parker Store Road and crashed into a ditch. That’s when officers say Womack jumped out of the car and ran into the woods. Trooper Jackson tried to chase him by foot for several hundred yards and called for a helicopter to help with the search. “When you see the infrared over your building, it’s a little interesting,” store owner Tony Dill said Womack ran behind his store and into the woods. He says he prepared for the worst. “Got my weapon out because I didn’t know if this was a robber or whatever. Somebody might be desperate and you’ve got to take precautions there to make sure you’re not a victim,” Dills said. Womack is now in custody in Carroll County. He is charged with felony evading by motor vehicle, misdemeanor resisting stop and frisk, and reckless driving and speeding.
