BELLS, Tenn- A Haywood County mother is furious after her six-year old son was left on a school bus for more than five hours, unattended. Now he said he is afraid to ride the bus. “I fell asleep and nobody woke me up,” Markavion Runions said. The school bus driver picked up the Haywood Elementary student Monday morning from home. School officials said Markavion fell asleep on the way to school and no one woke him up, leaving him on the bus for hours. The driver said she did not see him. “I don’t feel like they’re doing what they’re suppose to do if they leave a six-year-old on the bus for hours and he had to pry his way off the bus,” Rebecca Runions, Markavion’s mother, said. Eventually the first-grader was able to push open the door and walk to the High School where the bus had stopped, to ask for help. Haywood County School administrators said Markavion was found safe and the family was contacted immediately. According to officials, the driver has been working with the county for more than 20 years and has a perfect record. “So how did she walk past the front seat and not see him? ” Runions asked. According to officials there is a button located at the back of the bus that all drivers are required to press once they have dropped off all students. It is one of the ways they make sure no child is left on the bus. The driver was suspended without pay, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
