Ceramic Heater Fire Destroys House in Huntingdon

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. — Instead of unwrapping gifts on Christmas 58-year-old Eddie Woods Sr. and his fiance were looking for a place to stay after a heater in their laundry room set their house on fire. “We looked, we started looking through the rooms for a flame,” Woods said. “We didn’t see a flame so we looked outside and we saw that the carport was on fire.” According to the Huntingdon Fire Department the blaze started after a ceramic heater in the laundry room set the clothes on fire; but Woods says the heater was not on. “You can turn them all the way off but if it gets cold enough they’ll come on anyway by themselves, I never knew that,” Woods said. The home, located on Georgia Ave., didn’t stand a chance once the fire quickly spread from the laundry room to the garage, engulfing the house. “I never really spoke to anyone that it has happened to before but it’s not a good experience,” Wood said. Woods and his fiance are now working with the American Red Cross. They’ll be provided temporary shelter at a motel along with basic needs like food and clothing. But once they leave the hotel the couple isn’t sure what the future holds. “It’s scary because times are hard, money is tight,” Woods said. “It’s scary, it’s really scary.” To find out how you can help this family contact the Jackson American Red Cross at 731-427-5543.
