Fatal Fire in Hardeman County

HARDEMAN COUNTY — An elderly couple died in a fire in Hardeman County, Monday morning. Patty and James Mitchell, a couple in their 80s, were in their home on Peavine Road near Middleton on Highway 125 when the fire started. “It’s really sad,” Mica Hammons, a resident who works at a nearby store said. “When my husband called me and said there had been a fire I was hoping no one was hurt.” First Responders were unable to save the elderly couple, who they say more than likely died of smoke inhalation. “You hear about these things all the time but it’s heartbreaking when it hits close to home,” Hardeman County Sheriff, John Doolen said. The fire is under investigation, but the probable cause of the fire is the use of a space heater.
