JACKSON, TN–City council members banned some parties in Jackson where people provide their own alcohol. City leaders hope the new ordinance cuts down on crime. “You’d have the fine with penalty,” Lewis Cobb said, Jackson City Attorney. “You also would probably have the party shut down.” On Tuesday the board passed an ordinance banning bring your own alcohol (BYOB) parties at commercial properties between Midnight and 6 a.m. “A lot of criminal activity or things are happening during those hours at these functions that we’ll be able to curb,” said Charles Rahm, a city council member. Ernest Brooks, II cast the only vote against the ordinance. “I believe that this ordinance is misguided,” said Brooks, a city council member. “I believe they will have enforcement issues with it.” Jackson police say their officers responded to violent crimes at these type of events. Supporters believe banning late night BYOB parties will stop some of the violence. “I think the intent is the effort to reduce the opportunity for those type of crimes,” Major Thom Corley said, with the Jackson Police Department. Brooks believes the ordinance will not make an impact. “I commend all our efforts to fight crime,” he said. “I just think this one won’t get us to where we need to be.” The new ordinance only applies to parties on commercial property, not private homes. It takes effect at midnight. Council members say police will learn about the venues through social media.
