Henry County Family Loses Home After Suspicious Fire

MANSFIELD, Tenn. — Children’s shoes and toys lay outside of the house that fire officials said nearly burned to the ground over the weekend. Investigators said they aren’t sure what caused the fire, but are calling it suspicious. “The mother was pretty devastated to see everything gone,” Assistant Fire Chief, Darren Webb said. Saturday night, Mansfield Volunteer Fire Department in Henry County spent almost four hours putting out the fire at the mobile home on Buck Branch Road. The mother and three kids, ages 2, 3, and 5, who lived there were not at home at the time, and according to Webb, they hadn’t been home for days. “They had evacuated the house two weeks before because of the cold weather and they didn’t have heat,” Webb said. The family only returned home to pick up clothes. Webb said investigators are calling the fire suspicious because there was no heat source to spark a fire. In addition, he said the homeowner claims she left the door locked the last time she was home, but Webb said it was open when he arrived at the fire. Investigators said they still have a lot of questions that need answers, but in the meantime the community is pulling together to help the family without clothes or a permanent place to live.
