Blaze Destroys Family Home While Student Is Away on College Trip

BETHEL SPRINGS, Tenn. — A family of four in McNairy county is struggling to salvage anything left from a massive fire that destroyed their home. Firefighters say they got the call before 10:00 P.M. Sunday. Family friend Anna Wheeler said, “It’s not gonna be the same.” The owners say they were inside when the fire started but their two daughters were away from home. One of them, family members say, was on a college trip and was scheduled to come home Monday. Now family friend Megan West says the student no longer has a home to come to. “They called me and I was really shaking I don’t know,” West added. “I felt like I was fixing [about] to die, like I was having a heart attack.” Officials believe the blaze started in the garage and spread through the house, consuming the family car. The family who didn’t want to go on camera says if it wasn’t for the smoke alarm waking them up they would’ve lost more than their home. “We came over here really fast and just to see it in person, [it] was really bad,” West said. ” I couldn’t stop crying and to go talk to her about it cause it was like a house to all of us.” The owners say the fire destroyed most of their daughters’ belongings. “Just all the memories in the house with them it’s just really heartbreaking,” Wheeler said. Friends say they’re planning a benefit to help the family. The mom of the home says for now they’re staying with her mother-in-law. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
