Judge Denies Bond for Shooting Suspects

DOWNTOWN JACKSON, Tenn. — A Jackson judge denied bond for two men accused of killing an Arkansas State football player and his stepfather. Derrick Wade came to court on Tuesday in a wheelchair. “During the struggle of this robbery, he was shot in the leg,” said Captain Tyreece Miller, with the Jackson Police Department. Miller helped put Derrick Wade and his cousin, Johnny Wade, in jail. A judge denied bond for both men on Tuesday. “I think it’s appropriate,” said Miller. “I think it certainly fits the criteria for the heinous crimes that they committed.” Officers say the suspects shot and killed Johnny Shivers and Markel Owens last week on Walker Road. Police confirm Owens‘ mother, Shivers‘ wife, was also shot during the robbery. The Wades each face two counts of felony murder during the perpetration of especially aggravated robbery, attempted first degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault. Both men told the judge they grew up in Jackson. “Do you have family here?” asked the judge. “Yeah, in the courtroom,” responded Derrick. Police believe the Wades targeted Shivers because they found a large amount of marijuana inside his apartment. Both men denied having any drug, alcohol, or mental problems. Police confirm the victims‘ families did not attend Tuesday‘s arraignment. Johnny Wade and Derrick Wade are both due back in court on Jan. 30 at 9:30 a.m.
