Firefighters Warn About Burning Conditions After Fire Devastates Home

OBION COUNTY, Tenn.- Firefighters in Union City are being praised for saving a family’s puppy from a burning home, Thursday night. Family members said firefighters not only fought to save their puppy but also went above and beyond to try and save memories from being destroyed. “It was so wonderful. I praise God about it because we prayed for her and God took care of her,” said homeowner Odessa Jonas. ” They did so much, went above and beyond and I know they were cold and uncomfortable but I’m so appreciative.” Firefighters said they spotted the 1-year-old puppy named Sophie inside of the burning home and immediately tried to save her. They were forced to pull back as the roof began to cave into the home. Fire officials said it took around 15 minutes for Sophie to run to firefighters for help. Family members said the puppy was later checked out by a local vet who said she was okay but saved just in time. As firefighters put out the flames family members said they also fought to save pictures, photo albums and diabetic medication from inside of the burning home. Officials said anytime a pet or memory can be salvaged, they always try. “We work for them and we try to think what do they want what do they need out,” said Paul Holdeman, Chief Training Union City Fire Dept. “We try to think like they think …what’s important to me. With the roof falling in, everyone went home without an injury and that’s what makes me proud.” Jonas told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that starting over will be tough, thanks to Union City Fire Department she said it will be a journey she is not facing alone. “She’s (Sophie’s) had three baths at the vet’s office and she’s still sort of dingy looking but it looks nice to me,” said Jonas. ” I can’t imagine loosing her and my home…all I can say is ‘thank you’.” Fire officials said they believe the blaze started somewhere in the attic. They said it could of been sparked from an electrical outlet. If you would like to help the family a fund has been set up at any First State Bank underneath the Odessa Jonas House Fire Foundation.
