West Tennessee Couple Celebrates 70 Years of Marriage

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A West Tennessee couple celebrates 70 years of marriage, a milestone less than 1 percent of married couples reach. After 70 years, they say they are as honest with each other as they were when they first met. Despite what some people often argue, Herbert and Maurice Glenn say staying married all this time as been easy. “I don’t want nobody else. I ain’t thought about nobody else, it’s been this and that’s been all, all these years,” Herbert said. Maurice said their relationship has been filled with love, patience and sacrifice. “What kept us together, I think, you’ve got to learn to give a little and take a little,” Maurice said. Although the love has only grown over the years, they say it didn’t take long for them to realize they were meant for one another. Herbert said he first met Maurice at Antioch Baptist Church in Gadsden. He was 23 and she was 20 and he said it was love at first sight. “I don’t believe any man has been as happy over a wife as I’ve been over her,” Herbert said. A niece of the couple said they have inspired her, and she is writing a book about the success of their relationship.
