Interstate 40 Potholes Cause Problems for Drivers

JACKSON, Tenn.–Potholes along Interstate 40 cause problems for drivers. The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it will take weeks to make repairs. “Bang, bang. bang, bang and everything’s out of the cupboards and everything’s off the shelves,” said Marc Raymond, a RV driver. Raymond is traveling from Canada to Texas. “They‘re just terrible. They‘ve been very hard on the vehicle,” he said. “I always thought American highways were better than Canadian highways, but this is not true anymore.” TDOT confirms they have hundreds of potholes. The damage stretches from Shelby County to the Tennessee River in Benton County. “The moisture gets up under the cracks in the pavement,” said Nichole Lawrence, TDOT Community Relations Officer. “You have a freeze and then once everything thaws back out, it pops out. It contracts and pops out.” Crews got to work Wednesday making repairs. “We’re working, you know many hours, 24 hours in some cases trying to get some of these things fixed,” said Lawrence. Workers need dry weather to repair the potholes. Drivers concerned about wear and tear on their vehicles attempt to avoid the rough spots. “Might be a while before we come back this way,” said Raymond. Road crews are using a cold mixture to repair I-40. “It‘ll be a temporary fix for the most,” said Lawrence. “There will be some that we have to go back and repair permanently.”
