Deputies: Drugs, Gun found at West Tennessee School

HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. – Three local high school students are suspended after allegations of drugs and guns brought on campus. Residents who heard about the incident at Lexington High School are alarmed. “It’s not a place for guns, especially not with kids,” Wendi Cruz said, whose niece goes to Lexington High School. “Kids could get hurt and it’s not safe at all. For kids to have guns anywhere, drugs either,” Misty Burnell said, a former student. Henderson County deputies said on Wednesday, three sophomores raised the suspicions of school leaders. Their lockers and personal items were searched. Then, officers said marijuana was found and a search of their cars turned up a 410 shotgun in the backseat of one of their vehicles. Henderson County Schools Superintendent Steve Wilkinson released this statement: “We have a zero tolerance policy of drugs and weapons on campus. We follow that policy and because of that turned the investigation over to officials” “It kinda freaks me out. I have a son that goes to elementary school and if it can happen at a high school, it could happen there,” Wendi Cruz said. “I got a grandkid coming to this school over here, they need to be doing something about it,” Joe Cruz said, who lives in Lexington. Parents said they are infuriated not only because drugs and a gun made it to campus, but because they were not notified about the incident. “All the parents should have known something happened here. It’s ridiculous they didn’t,” Wendi Cruz said. The superintendent said the students are suspended until a disciplinary hearing, which has not been scheduled. Deputies said the school board now has the shotgun and are examining it to decide what action to take against the student.
