Severe Weather Prepardness
JACKSON, Tenn.–Severe weather poses a threat to life and property every year in West Tennessee. In a single severe weather season we can see anything from severe thunderstorms, hail, violent floods, and even tornadoes. This is why it’s so important to make sure that you and your family are prepared before the next storm hits. Ken Litscher, the Director of Student Residence at Union University, makes sure his people are ready to keep students safe. “We have staff who are monitoring weather… the weather situation. In the event of a Tornado Watch is when we really start to go into effect,” Litscher says. If a Severe Thunderstorm Watch or a Tornado Watch is issued for your county, this is when you should be prepared to act. Have an emergency kit ready to go in case those watches turn to warnings. Your emergency kit should include extra food and water in case of power outages or water main breaks. It should also include extra clothes, flashlights, extra batteries, shoes, and a weather radio so you can continue to monitor the weather threat. If a tornado is headed for your town, it’s also important to know where the safest place in your home is for you to wait out the storm. This will always be the lowest floor and the innermost part of your house where there are as many walls between you and the outside as possible.Such areas may include a bathroom or a closet. Storm shelters and basements are the safest locations for you to wait out severe weather. Mobile homes and cars are not safe places during storms. When a watch is issued, start thinking about where you can go that offers a more sturdy structure. Besides preparing stay alert to your NOAA weather radios, social media, and WBBJ-TV for the latest weather alerts.
