BROWNSVILLE, Tenn — State-wide tornado drills on Wednesday had local students preparing for severe weather. Students at Haywood Elementary were calm during their practice drill. School officials said it’s all because of their new $1.4 million tornado safe space. “We are in the safest place in the city,” Shalondria White, a teacher, said. This month, school officials held an open house for community members to tour the safe space that’s capable of withstanding 250 mile per hour winds. “I felt comfortable during the drill,” Skyla Zieglar, a third-grade student said. “I was able to sit next to my friends.” With possible severe weather headed to West Tennessee, students at the elementary school said they’re glad they now have the new tornado safe space. “How do we know it’s tornado proof?” Zieglar asked before responding to her own question. “I guess I will just have to trust it.” Officials said the space is open to the public after 3 p.m. when school dismisses.
