CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — Two suspects, Shay Lynn Whitfield and Sarah Ivey, were both arrested by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office around 8:00 a.m. Friday in connection to an attempted rape and kidnapping. According to court documents from the Carroll County courthouse, Whitfield was wanted for attempted rape and aggravated kidnapping, leaving residents like Miriam Holland uneasy. “What else is gonna happen, you know?” Holland questioned. “If it’s already going on and we’ve already got all the murders and stuff going on what else is gonna happen here?” The court documents say Whitfield and another man went to the victims home in Camden Feb. 10. The other man, Stephen Justus, reportedly told the victim he wanted something she had, then reportedly made sexual advances toward her. The two men then allegedly drove the victim to the interstate in Carroll County, where Justus reportedly showed her a gun and threatened to kill her if she ran. “I travel the interstate everyday,” Charles Moss, a resident, said. “I go to Memphis three days a week, it kinda hits home to me.” Whitfield and Ivey are both charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of schedule two substance. Whitfield is also charged with a separate count of violation of probation. Court documents did not show if Ivey was connected to the alleged crime. “I’m probably gonna think about it every trip up there from now on,” Moss said. “You never know what’s going on around you, especially on a busy interstate.” Ivey and Whitfield are being held at the Benton county jail. Bond for both suspects is set at $10,000.
