MCNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn. — Residents in Stantonville are cleaning up the damage after strong thunderstorm winds damaged homes, barns and sheds across the Stantonville community, Thursday night. “It sound like a tornado, like a train and it just hit the roof like there was a shot of water that come with it,” resident Billy Wagoner said. “It just come down like a downpour and the whole thing just hit the house with a bang.” Neighboring barns and sheds along Gilchrist Stantonville Road received damage to rooftops. Some barn and shed roofs were carried several hundred feet across pastures. Residents said the damage will take weeks to repair. “I heard a loud northern wind that hit the house like a Sherman tank and the roof popped,” Wagoner said. “The debris was flying everywhere in the yard banging up against the house…trees were falling, it was a very scary time we were all very concerned for our safety.” “It destroyed those and took the roofing out on the buildings, got the lawn mowers probably 4 or $5,000 in damage,” resident Kerry Stevens said. “It took the fence down.” Neighbors said they were terrified listening to loud winds snap trees all around them. “We just rode it out in the living room holding hands,” Wagoner said. Residents said the strongest and scariest part of the storm only lasted a few minutes. According to the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office, no storm-related injuries were reported. “We were blessed, God had his hand on us all over here,” Stevens said. “Yes, it could have been very, very bad.” Although some neighbors believe there was a funnel cloud in the area, no tornadoes have been confirmed by the National Weather Service.
