ADAMSVILLE, Tenn. – Ashes and charred land are all that remain after Logan Barber’s family farmland goes up in flames. The 18-year-old said he had just left the land after cleaning up from a bonfire the night before. “I was checking on things Sunday morning to make sure everything was out and just cleaning up, and I put some hot ashes in a bucket and it caught fire and the wind got it,” Barber said. Firefighters said the wind fueled the flames which burned across 25 to 30 acres, consuming anything and everything in its path. “(There was) fire and smoke as far as I could see,” Barber said. “It’d got so big we couldn’t control it and needed extra help,” Captain Jim Cromwel said with the Adamsville Fire Department. It even threatened a barn full of the family’s expensive farm equipment and multiple houses nearby. “This is what my family’s wanted for their whole life,” Barber said. “I mean to have a farm go up in flames like this, we’re lucky it didn’t hurt our barn or anything.” Even though firefighters were able to put out the fire before further damage was done, they stressed that an incident like this is easily preventable. “Take like a rake and scatter all the coals and stuff out, make sure it’s all all put out real good,” Captain Crowmell said. “It’s something I’ve done my whole life, but it’s something I’ll be a lot more cautious of before I do again,” Barber said.
