Child Safety Seat Concerns

JACKSON, Tenn.- A new study finds there is a good chance your child’s safety seat would not protect them in a crash, even if it is installed properly. The reason could be your child is too heavy. That is why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revised how child seats must be labeled by manufacturers. They now must include the weight of the car seat itself in the limits. If the weight of your child and his or her seat combined exceeds the limit, the seat could fail in a crash. “That’s how the car seats are crash tested, to be no more than a combined weight of 65 pounds for the car seat and the child and we need to follow what they recommend and what they do to crash test,” said Laura Floyd, a certified passenger safety technician. Studies show most parents still struggle with installing their child’s car seat properly. For more information on this new study, look for the links in the “Seen on 7” Section of www.wbbjtv.com.
