Trash Talk at Michie School

McNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn. — Michie School has a lot to be proud of. Students there are getting national accolades for their environmental efforts. They placed third in the country for the Keep America Beautiful project and won $500, a project they worked on with the Michie community. They collected more than 200,000 pounds of recyclable goods in just four months. Science teacher Debra Steen says she loves seeing students learn hands-on. “They get involved in it,” Steen says. “When they get involved in it, they’re gonna remember it longer.” Trailers are set up in areas across the town where community members can come put their recycled goods. Principal Wayne Henry says the project is more than just numbers, it teaches life lessons. “We have to be concerned with being productive citizens, growing up to be active in your community and making that an important part of your life,” Henry said. Students say they got to come together and learn how to work together to keep the community and the world a better place.
