Dyer County Roads Dangerous Due To Low Salt Supply

DYERSBURG, Tenn-Dyer County officials said they know why their roads are still coated with ice, even more so than other surrounding counties. Scott Hampton of the Dyer County Highway Department said it is because they are out of salt to pour on the icy roads. “We need a boat-load of salt,” Hampton said. He added that after back-to-back severe weather this winter they tried to find salt last month after realizing they were running low; but their supplier ran out because of excessive demand throughout the United States. “The salt really helps but there is just none around here available,” Hampton said. County officials said the lack of salt will double their time and efforts while cleaning up the winter mix. “We’re trying this salt/water mix with sand to find something to help us out,” Hampton said. It is a mixture of river sand and coal cinders. Hampton said it is all they have though it is not enough. “It’s just going to be like this for the next few days and we just have to get used to it and if you don’t have to get out, then don’t get out.” According to Dyer County Sheriff’s Department, all deputies have been working to help out with wrecks since Monday. So far no major injuries or fatalities have been reported as a result of the roads.
