Husband Indicted for First-Degree Murder in Shooting Death of Wife

A Jackson man was indicted Wednesday by the Madison County Grand Jury for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, Christy Smith. Michael Smith, Sr remains in custody at the Madison County Jail on $500,000 bond. He is scheduled to be formally arraigned Monday in Madison County Circuit Court. Shortly after 10 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2013, police responded to a shooting at 4 Holly Ridge Cove. Christy Smith, 36, was found dead inside the home from a single gunshot wound. Investigators determined that Michael Smith, 42, had shot Christy Smith, and then left the house in his truck. Police developed information that Michael Smith worked at SAIA Motor Freight Line at 400 Industrial Drive in Jackson. Officers searched the area and found Smith’s abandoned truck on the property. Police contacted SAIA personnel and asked to search to building. SAIA personnel responded and allowed police access. Upon searching, a police dog found Smith hiding in a bathroom. He was taken into custody around 1:20 a.m. Subsequently, Smith was charged with second-degree murder. During the investigation, police found evidence that the murder was premeditated prompting the more serious charge of first-degree murder.
