HORNSBY, Tenn. — Bolivar Police say Clint Barnes, a Hornsby Elementary school teacher, was arrested for simple possession of marijuana and driving with a missing brake light, last week. Ozell and William Shields, residents who live less than a mile from the school, say they had no idea the P.E. teacher was facing such serious charges. “We got two great grand-kids going [there], so it makes you feel bad,” Ozell said. Hardeman County Board of Education says Barnes was suspended immediately after the arrest on March 4 and they say he resigned March 6. Monday, Director of Schools Warner Ross, released a statement saying they’re saddened as there were no signs of any concerns within or outside of the classroom prior to the arrest. Bolivar Police Chief James Barker says Barnes had no prior record and says he was well loved by his students. He also said this is an unfortunate incident for the school system and the community, but some residents aren’t so understanding. “No matter who you are, you should be arrested, took to jail and pay your fines for doing this stuff,” William said. Barnes is scheduled to face a judge again April 2. Director of schools says Barnes’ teaching career now lies in the hands of the court.
