Republican Commissioners Hold Caucus Meeting

JACKSON, Tenn. – Republican members of the Madison County Commission gathered for a caucus meeting at the Old Country Store, Monday evening. They discussed some of the issues set to go before the entire body at their monthly meeting set for Monday, March 17. About two dozen party members attended the caucus. Discussions centered around a proposal to help fund new computers for the Jackson-Madison County School System and the appointment of an interim sheriff. Commissioners will decide at their next meeting whether to keep current Interim Sheriff Tommy Cunningham or appoint Jackson Police Captain Sammy Britt to the position. Cunningham was retired Sheriff David Woolfork’s chief deputy. By statute, when Woolfork was temporarily ousted then retired on March 5, Cunningham became sheriff. Since there is more than 120 days before the next election, commissioners are required to appoint an interim. “We did not make any decisions, tonight,” Commission Mark Johnstone said, who also serves as chairman of the commission. “We just tried to learn any additional fact that we have available to us.” Johnstone added the party’s hope is for a smooth transition for the new sheriff. In the end, the party leadership urged members to vote as they see fit.
