Two Suspects Wanted for Cashing Fake Checks

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Two suspects are wanted for stealing thousands of dollars from local businesses by cashing fake payroll checks, according to Gibson county authorities. Officials say they have video of the suspects cashing fake payroll checks at two West Tennessee supermarkets. “Only a few grocery stores around here cash payroll checks. I guess a lot of people get word of that,” Dyer police Chief Brad Lindsey said. Police released surveillance video in which they say a woman can be seen calmly cashing a NAPA Auto Parts paycheck at Food Rite in Dyer on Friday. Investigators said she could be working with another man seen in the video with her. Just a few hours later, Trenton police captured a clearer picture of the male suspect walking from the Food Rite in Trenton, where another fake check was cashed. Authorities said they do not believe the two are from Gibson County. “We have reason to believe they may be traveling through the area or may be from this region but not necessarily from Trenton,” Lieutenant James Wilson, with the Trenton Police Department said. “We know just about everybody here. They probably have some connection,” Chief Lindsey said. Chief Lindsey said the checks look real. He added all the details on these checks would match a legitimate NAPA check including the security disclaimer on the back. “Now-a-days it’s pretty easy with computer technology and software programs that will print out payroll checks and make them look professional,” Lt. Wilson said. That is why businesses may soon choose to change their policies on cashing payroll checks. “They’re just trying to take advantage of a system set up for convenience of hard working individuals,” Lt. Wilson said. Police also say the two drove away from each place in a blue van. If you have any information about the suspects. Call your local law enforcement.
