JPD Captain Retires, Celebrates Last Day on Force

EAST JACKSON — Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist stopped by a retirement party Friday afternoon to honor one very special officer. Captain Steve Overton with Jackson Police Department is retiring after 30 years. Mayor Gist presented a certificate honoring Overton’s three decades of service in the city. Overton says he started with Jackson Police as a patrolman, then worked with S.W.A.T team for more than 13 years. He was promoted to captain in 2010. He says he will miss being on the force, but there are some very important items on his to-do list. “I’m going to do a little fishing, boating, camping,” Overton said. “Do a little traveling. I like doing wood work type stuff. I plan on doing that.” Overton says he is very thankful for the love and community support. In his decision to retire. Police say at this time, a replacement has not yet been appointed.
