JACKSON, Tenn. — In light of this week being poison prevention week, those at the Tennessee Poison Center are reminding the public that poisoning is one of the leading causes of death. The leading cause of death from unintentional injuries in Tennessee is poison, which is ahead of motor vehicle crashes and guns. “You want to put safety latches on these doors if you’re going to store a poison or chemical behind or under a sink,” Fred Sesti at the Regional Clinic said. “Or someplace low so that children cannot get to them.” Last year, the Tennessee Poison Center received more than 90,000 phone calls to the poison help line in 2013. 71 percent of those who call TPC are treated at home and don’t have to go to the hospital.
