One Person Dead After Brush Fire

CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. – Just over the hill on Dogwood Lane, you can see the top of a house that was soon to be the home of a local couple. Those plans took a tragic turn, Monday afternoon. “He’s been here quite a while, and I think he maybe built that house,” says neighbor Robert Richardson. Chester County deputies say the land owner, whose name has not been released, had a permit to burn some brush. His four-wheeler was at the base of the hill, right beside the pond where deputies say he started the fire. According to officers, the man had a permit to burn brush. Officers believe just before 5 p.m., the flames got out of hand, and as he was trying to contain them, something went wrong. The victim’s partner returned home to find the woods blazing. Fire officials said she grabbed a hose and called her neighbors and 9-1-1 to help look for him. A neighbor found the victim before firefighters arrived. Deputies believe he may have been overcome by the smoke. “He’s a neighbor and we hate to lose our neighbors. We hate to lose anybody,” says Richardson. An autopsy will determine his exact cause of death.
