JEA, Viacom Dispute Could Lead to Lost Channels

UPDATE 4/1 10 a.m. — According to Steve Bowers at JEA – negotiations between Viacom and JEA (and other providers) continued overnight Monday. The National Cable Television Cooperative is handling all of the negotiations – they are representing all of the providers. “We’ve looked at the figures and said we don’t see a reason for this rate increase from Viacom,” Steve Bowers, JEA Spokesperson said. “We don’t think it is substantiated, and we don’t think it’s in the benefit of our customers.” The negotiations are still going on, but all of the channels are still on. JACKSON, Tenn.- Jackson Energy Authority cable TV subscribers could lose channels such as MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, VH1 and BET if JEA fails to reach an agreement with Viacom by midnight, Monday. Right now, the two are in contract negotiations. The contract dispute centers on the monthly per-subscriber fees the cable company pays to carry Viacom’s 23 networks.
