Tips on How to Prepare for Severe Weather

EAST JACKSON — A weather radio, first aid kit and fully charged phone are just some of the things you should start gathering now before severe weather hits. Should the weather take a turn for the worst, knowledge is always power. You want to know the differences between a watch or warning for when it is issued for your area. This will allow you and your family to be informed, get to safety and stay ahead of the storm. “The difference between a watch and a warning are big misconceptions within the public community. A watch means conditions are possible for severe weather. A warning means we think conditions are happening now or are going to happen very soon.” NWS Memphis Warning Coordinator Meteorologist Ben Schott said. If the weather continues to take a turn for the worst or if a tornado is headed toward you, it’s important to know where the safest place in your home is for you to wait out the storm. This will always be the lowest floor and the innermost part of your home where are as many walls between you and the outside as possible. A bathroom or a closet are suitable places to go but a storm shelter or basement will be the best option.
