EAST JACKSON — Madison County CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, swore in new volunteers for their program on Tuesday. CASA volunteers undergo a 30-hour training to learn about courtroom procedure and effective advocacy techniques. Volunteers are educated about specific topics ranging from sexual abuse to early childhood development and adolescent behavior. “You have to have a desire to serve children, you have to have a care and concern for children, to see the best in children, not to see their circumstances but to see that every child deserves a safe and loving and a permanent home,” Shannon Stewart, Executive Director of Madison County CASA, said. The purpose of CASA volunteers is to be an advocate for children who find themselves involved in the Juvenile Court system through no fault of their own. The children with whom volunteers work with are victims of child abuse and/or neglect. The organization says they are always looking for more men, and people with medical backgrounds.
