How to Prepare for the Storm

JACKSON, Tenn. — As severe weather moves in, first responders say being prepared is the key. One of the biggest risks people take during severe weather is not being ready. As severe weather season is in full swing, first responders say they have to be prepared for the worst, but they say it’s just as important for those at home to be ready for severe weather to hit. “It’s always better to have it beforehand than trying to make it up in the middle of the situation,” said Lt. Chip Holland at the Madison County Sheriff’s Dept. Emergency Management Director Marty Clements explained there are key things to have in you home when disaster strikes. “Go ahead and get your kits ready, get everything lined up, check your batteries, make sure your weather radio has batteries for it so you can get information,” said Clements. He also said to make sure you have these things: -Flashlights -Sturdy shoes -Gloves -First Aid Kit -Helmet -Reflective Vest (so first responders can see you) If you’re out on the streets and waters are rising, deputies say, “Turn around, don’t drown.” “If there’s high waters and you can’t see the road, you need to turn around and not try to drive through it. Just a couple of inches of water will sweep you off the road and then you become somebody we have to rescue,” explained Lt. Holland. First responders say don’t wait until the last minute to prepare, and be alert at all times. “Mainly it’s being prepared and watching,” said Clements. They say it’s important to have everything ready and be able to act quickly.
