Man Indicted for First-Degree Murder in Roommate’s Beating Death

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Jackson police investigators presented a case to the Madison County grand jury concerning the beating death of John Wesley Williams, 53, and Clarence Edward Johnson, 59, was indicted for first-degree murder. Johnson continues to be held at the Madison County Jail on $500,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned next Monday in Madison County Circuit Court. Shortly after 7 p.m. on Nov. 22, Johnson called police and reported that he had found his roommate, Williams, dead. Officers located Williams deceased inside the house at 104 Second Street. Police discovered that Johnson and Williams had been living there together. The house had no utilities and was not in a livable condition. Investigators and a county medical examiner were summoned to the scene. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force injuries. The investigation revealed that Johnson had struck Williams in the head multiple times with a crowbar and then disposed of the weapon. Police later recovered the crowbar, hidden in a yard on Middle Avenue. Johnson was taken into custody for questioning shortly after he reported the discovery of Williams’ body. Investigators later uncovered that Johnson had killed Williams.
