BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — On Wednesday, Haywood Park Community Hospital announced it will end inpatient and emergency services, effective July 31. At 92 years old, Lula Jarrett said that announcement worries her. “It’s good to have a hospital close,” Jarrett said. The facility will still provide treatment for minor illnesses and non-life threatening injuries, but that means Haywood County residents must drive at least 30 miles to the nearest hospital in Jackson. “It’s devastating to the community,” Commissioner Robert Green said. “Because we have a large population of seniors and people with issues who need dialysis.” Green said healthcare isn’t all the area will lose. “We don’t need to lose jobs, we’re trying to get jobs,” Green said. In a news release issued Wednesday, hospital owner Community Health Systems said it will try to place employees at it’s five other West Tennessee locations or offer them a severance package. Hospital officials could not say how many people are employed at the facility. Brownsville Mayor Jo Matherne said in the meantime city and county officials will look for other health care options for their residents.
