OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — Pete Whitten says he was outside when he saw the tornado swirling toward him. He says he fought his way inside to save his wife in the family room. “I think what happened was the wind was so bad that it [blew] all my windows out in the front of the house,” Whitten said. “And it was so much air in the house that I couldn’t open the door.” Whitten is one of many in Obion County whose house was ripped to shreds in Monday’s EF-2 twister. He says before he could get inside, the roof fell on his wife. “That’s where I hurt both hands and after pushing for a while the roof finally blew off, and that allowed me to get into the house,” Whitten said. Whitten and his wife escaped with minor cuts and bruises to their arms, head and back, but both say they’re OK. Volunteers like Wendy Clark came out in support. “It’s hard, it’s hard when you have an emergency like this and you don’t have a place to sleep,” Clark said. “You don’t have a place to live and you don’t have hot food.” Clark also says the victims will need more than money. “What do you do, you take it out there you get in the middle of it and you help them clean up,” Clark said. “Help them eat and just make sure that nobody is left alone.” Whitten says he and his wife are staying with a friend and they’re not sure if they’re going to rebuild.
