Accused Child Rapist Formally Charged

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Jackson police have arrested and charged a man in a 2013 child rape. Darryl Whisnant, 41, of Jackson, was arraigned Wednesday morning in Jackson City Court for rape of a child involving a 12-year-old girl. Whisnant’s next scheduled court appearance is 1:30 p.m. on May 15 in City Court. He remains in custody at the Madison County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond. In January 2014, the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services notified Jackson police after they received a referral that Whisnant had molested the girl. Investigators with the police department’s Special Investigations Bureau, with the assistance of investigators from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, determined that Whisnant had raped the girl at his Jackson apartment in 2013. Jackson police arrested Whisnant at an apartment on Berry Street around 3 p.m. Tuesday and transported him to the Madison County Jail.
