WEST JACKSON — The Jackson area chapter of the American Red Cross recognized some outstanding local heroes on Thursday afternoon. Several were honored, including publisher of the Jackson Sun Roy Heatherly, who received the Humanitarian of the Year award. Captain Robert Layman received Uniformed Officer of the Year award, and Maxine McNatt was named American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year award. Mark Kahler with the Jackson Red Cross said he wanted to acknowledge those doing good work in the community. “We have people right here in Jackson who are doing tremendous things on their behalf, and I think it is important to recognize that,” Kahler said. First responders also attended the luncheon. The event doubled as a fundraiser for the Red Cross.
