DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A coffee fungus is driving up the price of specialty beans. The coffee rust fungus has been attacking crops across Latin America. The U.S. Agency for international development says if this disease is not under control soon, the United States could see very significant price impacts. However, local coffee shops like Ugly Mug in downtown Jackson say it’s too early to tell if this disease will impact how much consumers will pay. “It really just depends on how long this plant disease lasts,” Cole Sanders, general manager, said. “If it’s something that can be contained within certain areas certain geographic location then the chances of it affecting American coffee drinkers may be slim.” Larger companies like Starbucks say they have multiple suppliers, and they say so far they have been able to source enough coffee.
