City Council Votes on New Budget on First Reading

JACKSON, Tenn.- Leaders in Jackson said the city budget is down by millions of dollars compared to last year. Mayor Jerry Gist and the Jackson City Council held its first reading Tuesday for the city budget meeting. According to Gist, the city budget was $63 million last year and it is now at $60 million. City leaders said the cuts came after paying the county and the Jackson-Madison County School District. The mayor said the city is still doing well despite the cuts. “I think all in all the city is going to do well next year, we’re adopting the same tax rate, we will not have an increase in taxes,” said Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. Gist said all city departments were asked to make 3 to 4-percent budget cuts. However, all city funding was cut for emergency management services. The city council will vote on the budget for a second time on June 30.
