Healthwatch: Exercise for Seniors

WEST JACKSON — The awareness for senior citizens to stay active through exercise is on the rise. What are the benefits for seniors in developing and maintaining an exercise program? Meet local senior citizen Sandra McKnight. When it comes to exercise, she’s been consistent for more than 35 years. “In 1978, I started walking two miles a day,” McKnight said. “I lived way out in the country and miles were everywhere.” Even when there were setbacks, Sandra kept on walking. “So I was out walking and I broke my leg and stepped in a hole and so when I got my wheelchair, I pushed that thing up and down the driveway because exercise is a must,” McKnight said. Exercise among seniors not only improves physical well being, but mental strengths increase as well. “I work out as much for my mind as I do my body, you know your body can get old and worn out, but your mind really responds to exercises too,” McKnight said. Added benefits of exercise among seniors include better flexibility, grip strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness. It also lowers the risk for diabetes and heart disease.
