Tennessee Street Park’s Grand Opening

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — From walking tracks, water playgrounds, and a 24-hour wireless security system, city officials say they’re proud to show off the Tennessee Street Park to West Tennessee. Savannah City Manager Gary Welch says this park has been in the works since 2011, a place for Savannah residents to come enjoy. “I think it’s so great. It’s a way that kids can get out of the house and get off their games,” parent Theda Bumpous said. Parents say they’re enjoying having a place to bring their kids. “It’s one of the biggest things I’ve ever seen here,” parent Cody McFerson said. A 17-foot fountain is the centerpiece, along with water pads, and a walking trail. It’s located in one of Savannah’s historic areas where the elementary school used to sit. “This is where I went to school, and now my kid is playing on it,” Lo Yarboro said. One of the most unique things about this area is the security that has gone into making it a safe place for the community. Welch said these cameras show at City Hall and the local police station, but can also be seen on a smart phone app. With cameras all around the park, he says if anything goes wrong, they’ll be able to tell. The video will be stored for up to 30 days, if it ever needs to be reviewed. For now, parents say they’re just happy the park opened in time for the summer heat. “I’m really excited,” Bumpous said. “Maybe it’s going to go over really good and the kids are going to enjoy their summer.” Mayor Shutt says he had the idea for this par about 4 years ago for a park like this, and the city ran with it. Welch says the goal is to keep the park clean and new, and it will become a vital part of historic downtown Savannah.
