EAST JACKSON — Jackson State Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new nursing building Tuesday. “It’s approximately 30,000 square feet, has two very large stadium style classrooms and then another classroom and skills labs for the students to practice,” Leslie West Sands said, JSCC Program Director and Division Dean of Nursing. With enrollment tripling, JSCC’s nursing department has an urgent need for a new facility. Construction on the more than $8 million building, which will house a six bay simulation lab, began Tuesday. The facility was funded by the state and a match of more than a $1 million from West Tennessee Healthcare. This is JSCC’s first major expansion since the 1980s; it is expected to open by the end of summer 2015.
