EAST JACKSON — Heavy smoke could be seen in East Jackson on Sunday after a home on Hamilton Street caught fire. Fire officials were called to the home just after 1 p.m. According to firefighters, a preliminary investigation shows the fire may have been caused by misuse of extension chords. Firefighters say the house is not a total loss, but it was heavily damaged. WBBJ spoke with a witness who says he was walking through the neighborhood when he saw the flames. “Well when we got out of church we just started coming down the street, we just saw a little smoke and fire,” Octavius Curry said. There was one woman and a dog inside the house at the time of the fire. They both escaped, but the dog had minor burns. The fire is still under investigation.
