LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Eighty people will lose their jobs in coming weeks, as Altama Delta Corporation closes its doors. All employees at the plant, located on 340 Natchez Trace Drive, are expected to be terminated on or within the 14-day period starting on July 1. The company, which provides combat boots for the military, has been in Lexington for more than 20 years. It started out with more than 150 employees, and has since made cuts to make ends meet. “They are trying to sell this company and hopefully they’ll find a buyer and everything goes off and they keep the plant here, we reopen and we go on,” Lexington Mayor David Jowers said. The company, which has locations in Tennessee and Puerto Rico, is closing down due to lack of finances. The company is the leading provider for military standard boots in America. “As the war’s tapering off in Afghanistan and Iraq, we’re certainly glad our troops are coming home, but sometimes that also causes less money to be spent on military and cuts backs are necessary,” Mayor Jowers said. Mayor Jowers said if the plant does not stay open, he is hopeful other opportunities will come their way. “We’re gonna be bringing them some more jobs. I don’t think there’s any question about that. We’re gonna make it happen,” he said. According to a release, employees will have no transfer or relocation rights. Mayor Jowers said he and a response team will meet with the employees on Thursday to discuss the next step and to help them apply for unemployment.
