Victim in Dyersburg Walmart parking lot beating dies

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — The victim listed in “extremely critical condition” after suffering a beating in a Walmart parking lot has died. Ricky Fortune, 50, died at Regional Medical Center in Memphis after the altercation on Thursday at around 1:45 a.m. Upon arrival, police located a male lying motionless in the parking lot. Witnesses at the scene told officers Fortune was punched in the face by another person who had fled the scene. The suspect, Jeffrey A. Miller Jr., 23, was located a short time later at the All-In-One located on Highway 51 Bypass and taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault. Miller’s sister, Krystal Rude, said her brother was just trying to protect her. Fortune was staying at a local Dyersburg hotel while working for a building construction company. Miller Jr. will be arraigned on June 16 at 4 p.m. in Dyersburg City Court on charges of aggravated assault. These charges may be upgraded now that Fortune is dead.
