Man charged in shooting that injured infant and mother, police seek three more suspects

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Jackson police have charged a man for shooting into a house with six people inside last Thursday on East End Street, and the investigation is ongoing to identify at least three other men involved. Damian McFarland, 19, was arraigned at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Jackson City Court on six counts of attempted murder. McFarland’s bond was set at $500,000, and his next scheduled court appearance is at 1:30 p.m. on June 26. McFarland has a criminal history dating back to early 2013 when he was arrested and charged with shoplifting and simple assault. Around 11 p.m. last Thursday, officers responded to a shooting on East End St. As police were responding, officers passed a car speeding away from the scene. Officers later learned that the car was driven by a 20-year-old man who had been injured. When police arrived, they learned that the home at 101 East End had been shot into numerous times. The house was occupied by six people at the time. Two people were uninjured. Two other people, a 21-year-old woman and her 4-month-old son, had been shot. A 19-year-old man inside the house had suffered a minor injury. He was treated and released from the hospital at 3:15 a.m. Friday. The 20-year-old man who had driven the car away from the scene drove to East Baltimore Street. Investigators learned that he had also been shot inside the house. He was transported by ambulance from East Baltimore to Jackson General Hospital. “We believe that one of the people inside the house was specifically targeted and the others who were injured were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Captain Tyreece Miller, with the Jackson Police Department. The mother and infant were both transferred to Memphis hospitals. The infant was released from Lebonheur Children’s Hospital on Friday. The 20-year-old man was released from Jackson General Hospital on Saturday. Investigators developed information that Damian McFarland was one of at least four people responsible for the shooting. McFarland was located and taken into custody Saturday evening. The investigation has shown that one of the men inside the house was specifically targeted during the shooting. Investigators are pursuing leads and attempting to identify the other three people involved. “The motive is becoming clear to us, but right now we can’t release that,” said Miller. “The investigation is very extensive. It’s complex and it’s going to relate to some other things that are ongoing and we look to be making future arrests in other associated cases.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department’s Major Crimes Bureau at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477 (TIPS).
