JACKSON, Tenn. — The Miss Tennessee scholarship pageant is in full swing in Jackson and this year it plays home to a very special mother-daughter duo. Kellye Cash-Sheppard, the 1987 Miss America and former Miss Tennessee, has the chance to watch her daughter Cassidy follow in her footsteps this year. “I think I’m more nervous as a mom than I was 28 years ago as a contestant,” Kellye Cash-Sheppard said. Cassidy Sheppard is this year’s Miss Dyersburg. She says her mother has been a huge supporter. “She helps me with modeling and just encouragement,” Sheppard said. “She kind of had to transition from Miss America to pageant mom so it’s been really interesting, and she’s been such a great supporter.” With a former Miss America as her mother and their uncanny resemblance, chances are many will be keeping a close eye on Sheppard throughout the competition, but her mom said she is on her own path. “She wants to say, ‘yes, my mom was Miss America but I am my own person,'” Cash-Sheppard said. “So really we are two very different people.” Whether she is crowned, Sheppard is grateful for the opportunity to compete. “It’s so worth it, it’s unbelievably worth it,” Sheppard said. “Just meeting the girls. We have 36 incredible women. They are overachievers. Every single woman is an overachiever.” You can catch Cassidy compete in the Miss Tennessee scholarship pageant this Saturday night, when Miss Tennessee is crowned at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.
