NORTHEAST JACKSON — High school student Jasmine Taylor says she used to struggle in school until she enrolled to Liberty Tech in Jackson. “Liberty has changed my life tremendously,” Taylor said. “[Liberty Tech Principal Dr. June Murry] then started working with me. I then started making good grades and my grades have changed tremendously. I’m happy!” Jasmine isn’t the only one noticing the school’s potential. Liberty Tech High School along with Madison Academic both received a bronze medal by U.S. News and World Report, for outstanding college prep and standardized assessment scores. Superintendent Dr. Verna Ruffin credits hard work. “That’s a goal and I think they are to be commended from the leadership of the principals, the outstanding work of the teachers that work there, and our great students who have chosen to go to these great schools.”Dr. Ruffin said. This spring, U.S. News & World Report looked into 333 high schools across the country, but only 88 schools were given recognition. Two of those were in the Jackson-Madison County School System. Dr. Murry says she’s proud. “These students are connecting their hands with their course subject. So they have the opportunity to not only learn our core subjects like science, math and English.” Dr. Murry said. To earn the recognition, schools had to show diversity in both student body and in classes focused on career readiness. “I think this brings a level of attention to two outstanding schools that certainly deserve it and also raise a little competition cause we all want to achieve that status and above.” Dr. Ruffin said.
