Deputies looking for answers after tombstone discovered in ditch

BOLIVAR, Tenn. — A headstone sits outside of the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department, and deputies said they have no idea what cemetery it came from. Investigators said employees with the Hardeman County Highway Department found the headstone in a ditch on Vildo Road in Bolivar. “We don’t know how the headstone got in the ditch, but our goal is to get it back to where it came from,” Lt. Dana Knight said. The name on the tombstone reads Luberta Haynes. Investigators said so far all they know is that records show she died in Shelby County. According to Haynes’ tombstone, she died in 1983, at 78 years old. Investigators said everything else is a mystery. “Obviously the headstone is missing from her grave,” Sheriff John Doolen said. “And if it were me I would want it put back where it was initially placed.” The Department is working with the city’s local newspaper, searching death records and databases, in hopes of finding out who Luberta Haynes is and where her headstone belongs. Deputies are asking anyone with information to call the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department.
