TBI’s investigation into Woolfork sex tape to take a while

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said it expects the investigation into possible criminal charges from the recording of a sex tape involving former Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork to take a while longer. “I would expect that it would take some time to collect the necessary evidence and interviews and follow the leads, as we would do in any case,” said Josh DeVine, Public Information Officer with the TBI. Jackson Police Chief Gill Kendrick and District Attorney General Jerry Woodall recused their agencies from the investigation. The TBI is handling the inquiry. The Tennessee District Attorney’s Conference has assigned the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office as special prosecutors. General Amy Weirich’s office served as special prosecutors in the Woolfork criminal trial, as well. Woolfork was found not guilty in May on a count of attempted sexual battery. A misdemeanor count of domestic assault was thrown out by the judge right before jury deliberation. Woolfork alleges his former mistress Deputy Sharon Sangster broke the law when she admittedly video taped them having sex on two different occasions last year. Portions of the video were played during Woolfork’s criminal trial. Sangster testified in court during the trial that she recorded their encounter in her bedroom without his knowledge. She said she did it to have proof that the who had an affair. Woolfork also alleged Madison County Constable Frankie Lax broke the law by making copies of the videos and showing them to others. Lax testified on the stand to making the copies and showing the videos to Jimmy Wallace, a local Republican leader, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Leigh Grinalds. The TBI said it will not release a lot of new information until after findings are presented to the special prosecutor. “We really take the gravity of our cases very seriously,” said DeVine. “That’s why we don’t release a lot of specific information about cases as they’re ongoing.”
