Grants approved to curb violence in Jackson

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — The Jackson City Council approved multiple grants on Tuesday in efforts to curb violence. In a 5-1 vote, the city approved a 3-year GRIT or Gang Resistance Intervention Grant. The funds will help install additional cameras in high-crime areas and designate a special prosecutor for gang related arrests. The city also approved grants for a family justice center and renewal of the domestic violence grant. “We’re trying every opportunity we can to leverage state and federal dollars and match them with 25 percent of local dollars to continue our fight against crime,” Gist said. In three to four years the grants are expected to be more than $300,000. After Gist signs a contract for the GRIT grant, the money will go to use within the next month.
